The land is situated to the rear of Gatesgarth (see the title plan) to the north of the village of Braithwaite. Gatesgarth sits between two roads which head northwards from the centre of Braithwaite towards Thornthwaite. The eastern road sits at the foot of Braithwaite How near to the A66 and the western road, known as How lane, runs through the hillside approximately 20 metres above the lower road.
