During the summer of 2023, Auction House East Anglia offered a former print shop and self-contained one-bedroom flat in their July livestream auction. Situated on a bustling shopping parade in Norwich’s coveted ‘Golden Triangle’ area, the vacant property was listed for sale with a guide price between £225,000 and £250,000.
The Winning Bid
Simon Howland, a seasoned property investor, and his sister Charlie Day were on the lookout for a venue to turn Charlie’s vision of a coffee shop into reality. Recognising the potential the property had to offer, they secured 119 Unthank Road with a winning bid of £243,000 on auction day.
Simon described how he’s “bought a few pieces over the years through Auction House” but that “this one was a little bit different, and I looked at this with my heart in it as much as my head”.
Picking up the keys just four weeks later, work immediately began on converting the former printers into a vibrant independent coffee shop.
Why Grounded?
Charlie explains how they came up with the business name - “The name grounded we had because of coffee beans, as well as my flying bringing me back to Norwich - bit of a double meaning there!”
In a span of just six months, the duo completely transformed the space, with every step of the impressive refurbishment captured on their Instagram account @grounded.coffee.bar
Grounded's interior is a striking blend of sleek and inviting design, taking inspiration from Charlie’s favourite London bars and restaurants.
Looking to the Future
When asked about the hopes for Grounded’s future, Charlie described their vision of it being “a place where people can come to enjoy and sit in a friendly and comfortable environment. I want us to become a community base and a real champion of all things local with our cakes and bakes.”
For anyone considering exploring a dream business venture, Charlie shared this advice – “Without a doubt, I would say do it. It is daunting, but sometimes you’ve just got to take the jump and go!”
