DIY Home Projects on a Budget

03.03.2023

There’s no denying that making improvements to your property can be expensive, from hiring trades people to purchasing materials, budgets can very quickly spiral out of control. There are however many renovation projects you can undertake yourself that won’t break the bank and can breathe new life into your home.

Getting Started

If you want to renovate on a budget, make sure you plan ahead. Firstly, set your budget and stick to it! Before purchasing materials, measure the area, then measure again to be sure. Factor in the cost of any tools or equipment you need to purchase.

Do your research

Take advantage of free resources such as youtube and social media. There are tons of guidance videos out there and you may find that there are more cost effective methods of achieving the same outcome if you invest some time into your research.

Paint your front door and windows

A freshly painted front door or windows can do wonders for your property’s ‘kerb appeal’ and make them look as good as new. There are lots of specialist paints out there at a reasonable price for painting uPVC with long lasting effects. If your door handle or letterbox has seen better days, these can easily be replaced by hand and at a low price too!

Paint or wrap your kitchen cabinets

Just like your front door, a fresh lick of paint can bring a tired old kitchen to life in a matter of days. Another more fiddly but less messy solution would be to vinyl wrap your cabinets. You can also vinyl wrap your worktops and even install vinyl wrap or wall tiles to your wall or splashback to totally transform the space.

Install wall panelling

Head over to Tik Tok and Instagram and you’ll find thousands of videos displaying a very ‘easy’ way to add character to your home - wall panelling. Some techniques are easier than others. Tongue and groove style cladding can be purchased as full mdf sheets that you simply paint and glue/nail to the wall. Other styles require a bit more planning and preparation to ensure even spacing and straight lines.

Lay new flooring

New flooring can totally transform a room, making it appear more open and brighter. Vinyl and laminate flooring can be installed yourself with relative ease (dependant on the space). Order more than you need to allow for wastage/mistakes. If you can, remove the skirting board, lay the flooring then re-intall the skirting for a neater finish.

There are many more home improvement projects that can be done yourself if you have the time to commit. These can be an excellent way to add value to your property before selling or modernise a recent purchase.
